Plant Management and Safety Service

DA RIVEDERE

The plant management and safety service takes care of the maintenance and operation of technological systems serving buildings, equipment, experiments, conventional security systems and fire prevention. The service coordinates four departments: electrical systems, water treatment systems, air treatment systems, security systems. The service is in charge of managing the disposal of special waste from the laboratories. Since 2008, the laboratories are powered by a high voltage 132/20 kV armored station with a power of 32000/40000 kW (ONAN/ONAF) through an underground cable about 3.8 km long that starts from the Terna station of Camin and goes up to INFN LNL. The maintenance includes the periodic replacement of the cable protections, the check of the switches and the purification of sulphur hexafluoride gas. The laboratories have six medium voltage ring cabins for a total of 12 MW dedicated to the Tandem-Piave-Alpi accelerator complex. The total power supply of the laboratories in 2021 is 18 MW.
LNL have
15 refrigeration groups for a total of about 7 MW, plus about 1 MW of small groups for cooling of experimental apparatuses
3 heating plants for a total of 3 MW
2 continuous compressed air compressors each with a capacity of 230 l/s at a constant pressure of 9.5 bar
production and cooling systems with demineralised and ultra-pure water (0.056 µS/cm) with a total capacity of 400 m3/h at a constant temperature of 20°C and constant pressure of 7 bar by means of inverter pumps with a view to increasing energy saving
a production system from a well water treatment plant with a chemical-physical circuit with a capacity of 5 m3/h and pre-treatment with reverse osmosis and recirculation of technological water with final treatment through a phyto-purification plant
16 air treatment units and 120 air conditioners and 340 fan coils for the heating/air conditioning of the premises (mainly offices)
Emergency and safety equipment includes
9 emergency generators for a total of 3.8 MW
10 UPS for powering CED and security equipment for a total of 480 kW
7 oxygen deficiency detection stations with 32 sensors
8 fire detection panels composed of 485 optical smoke detectors, 11 linear smoke detectors
128 glass breakage buttons
104 optical-acoustic plates
8 self-powered sirens
270 fire extinguishers
56 (UNI45-UNI70) fire hoses
In 2020, the heating/air conditioning system of the guesthouse was completely redone.
A major workload under Facilities Management are all SPES plant engineering sites.
The plants must be maintained, updated and/or replaced to ensure greater reliability and efficiency of the same, this involves a major organizational effort (study for improvements, tenders, construction sites, …) that constantly engages the staff of the service.
