The US Department of Energy (DoE) and the National Institute for Nuclear Physics – Italy (INFN) announce the 2022 edition of the Summer Exchange Program, dedicated to the exchange of US and Italian students in science and engineering.

Students are offered the possibility to work on projects which will further their experience in the areas of science and technology that are relevant for their academic training.

Research activities in the LNL are pursued in all major INFN areas of interest: Astroparticle Physics, Nuclear Physics, Accelerators Physics, Interdisciplinary Physics and Detector Physics.
Several groups are participating in experimental programs in collaboration with US institutions.

Candidates must be enrolled as students at a US university and they must have begun, at the time of application,at least the third year of a US University curriculum in physics, engineering or computing science.

They can join a team at INFN LNL for approximately 8 weeks between in June-July 2023 or September-October 2023. LNL Summer closing period is in August 2023.

The avaible position at INFN LNL is the following:

PROJECT: Outreach Cosmics Rays Activities (OCRA) in CC3M
TITLE: Cosmic rays: what they are, how to observe them, how to measure them at sea level.
DESCRIPTION: The standard cosmic ray detection technique based on plastic scintillators will be
used. In the National Laboratories of Legnaro (LNL) a muon telescope and two single plastic
scintillators with the necessary electronic chains for coincidence mode measurements are available
and usable.
The data analysis for the verification of the muon flux measurement as a function of the inclination
angle of the telescope detectors and as a function of the position of the scintillators with respect to
the east-west direction can be performed.
ACTIVITIES: Data analysis; measurement of the effects of varying environmental conditions
(temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure) on the average values of the muon flux.

PERIOD: About 9 weeks from the beginning of June 2023 to the end of July 2023. If possible, the best period is June-July.
