What an environmental management system is?

An environmental management system is a means:


• to identify,
• to check and to manage,
• to improve

environmental problems related to organization’s activities, as well as

• to prevent,
• to deal with
environmental emergencies.

According to definition of standard UNI EN ISO 14001, an environmental management system is “part of the overall management system that includes organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes, resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining organization’s environmental policy”.

 
How is it possible to implement an environmental management system?

It is possible to implement an environmental management system in according with standard UNI EN ISO 14001 by the application of four principles: plan, do, check, act.
Plan means to define the necessary actions and to single out the necessary responsibilities to achieve the improvement of environmental performances.
Do means to carry out planned actions, according to established time and way.
Check means to control that there is a coherence between what is made and what is planned and that what is made is in according to the established requests.
Act means to verify periodically that environmental management system is coherent with environmental objectives, programmes and policy and to define the necessary corrective and preventive actions to achieve the continual improvement of the system.

An environmental management system works in according to the following ISO 14001 scheme:

 
Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro environmental certification in according to UNI EN ISO 14001

In 2004 Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro requested an environmental audit to DNV GL, a certification body accredited by Accredia (http://www.dnvgl.it/).
DNV GL carried out an audit on Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro’s environmental management system with the aim of determine whether or not the EMS
• conforms to planned arrangements for environmental management, including the requirements of ISO 14001,
• has been properly implemented and maintained,
• is effective in meeting the organization’s policy and objectives.

Then the certification body issued the environmental certificate according to ISO 14001.

The Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro's management system certificate is valid from 15/10/2016 until 15/09/2019 (UNI EN ISO 14001:2015).


The environmental certification scheme in according to ISO 14001 is the following:

Periodically DNV GL carries out an audit after which the certificate is renewed, if the system works well.
