EPICS in SPES Control System
SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is an INFN project whose aim is the realization of a Radioactive Ion Beam facility as an intermediate step towards Eurisol.
SPES will provide the nuclear physicists community with neutron-rich ion beams obtained by impinging an UCx target with a 40 MeV proton beam produced by a commercial cyclotron.
The unstable nuclei beams will be injected into the superconducting Linac ALPI and reaccelerated up to an energy of 10 Mev/amu.
EPICS has been chosen as the general framework to develop the control system of SPES. The main challenge is integrating different hardware technologies under a common model of data and communication protocol. In fact, due to security requirements, a significant part of controls will be based on industrial PLCs, while the control of accelerator equipment and beam diagnostic instrumentation will be implemented on native EPICS IOCs.
Either Linux and Vxworks based IOCs are currently in use for the control of Target Laboratory instrumentation, EPICS Archiver is running in conjunction with mySQL to store/retrieve PV data, while CSS is being used to develop graphical interfaces.

EPICS documentation related to this project:
An LNL Epics Wiki site has been realized to keep track of the development setup and mantain a documentation of the works done.
Resuming the rules adopetd on the most important Epics sites a first Naming Convention document has been released.
A first raw raw variables list should be coded using that naming convention.
