PERMIT OF STAY FOR FOREIGNERS
Every foreign citizen staying in Italy longer than 8 days (for other reasons than tourism) has to register his presence at the local Police Authority (Questura), to get a document called “PERMIT OF STAY” (permesso di soggiorno). This is the only legal document that can legitimise the stay of a foreign citizen in Italy.
IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE LAW IN FORCE IN ITALY, THE APPLICATION MUST BE PRESENTED WITHIN 8 DAYS FROM THE DATE OF ARRIVAL.

APPLICATIONS
From June 2004 there is a new service for LNL and University guests, called SAOS (Assistance Service for Foreign Guests) and placed at the main seat of the University of Padua, Palazzo del Bo’, via VIII Febbraio no. 2, Padova. The appointments at SAOS for LNL requests and renewals of the permits of stay are fixed by Barbara Tonello (ph. 049/8068.521).

HOW TO REACH SAOS
You can reach SAOS by bus from Legnaro to Padova. The bus stop is on the main road outside the Labs; buses leave every 30 minutes and arrive at the railway station or at the bus station in Padova. From there you can go by bus or on foot.

DOCUMENTS TO BE ENCLOSED
• 6 colour passport-size photos
• 1 stamp* (called “marca da bollo” in Italian) for 11 euro
• passport in original + one copy of all the sheets
• copy of the invitation letter with the stamp of the Italian Embassy

* sold in every tobacconist’s shop.

WHERE TO COLLECT THE PERMIT OF STAY
You will receive the permit of stay in about 45 days from the application date. You can collect it at the main entry of the Questura (placed in via S. Chiara - Padova), from Monday to Saturday from 8.00 a.m. to 20.00 p.m., by submitting the following documents:
- receipt of the application;
- passport.

VERY IMPORTANT
The permit of stay (or the receipt) must be given back to the Police Authority at the airport or the border when you leave Italy.
